My Story of Resilience

by Anonymous*

I landed in 1970 and on my first day, I felt very strange. There were unfriendly people, a different culture and my qualification wasn’t valued.

That is why I could not get a job in my own profession. So, I went door to door to different hospitals, nursing homes and in day care centers.

Somebody told me and gave me an Agency’s number. I called the agency and went for interview. I found the individual who interviewed me to be ignorant and less qualified than me.  She said “you are overqualified and you have had no canadian nursing experience”.

I told my interviewer, “tell me what is the difference in English nursing and Canadian nursing.” She got very offended  and gave me  a nursing aid job.

I joined the job (nursing home) found it very difficult to work with such unprofessional people. I resigned and went back to England.

There are number of things here, it is a big country that is rich in resources and opportunities. I gathered, if anybody wants to make money or get higher education, there are hundreds of opportunities to progress; even uneducated people can become very rich with hard work.

Finally, I came in Toronto in 1972  for the second time and settled well with success.
